Description: St. Paul’s Province Archives, Oblates of Mary Immaculate, which are believed to include papers of Rev. E. Casimir Chirouse, O.M.I., and Bishop Modeste Demers (1809-1871) of the Diocese of Vancouver Island, 1847-1871.
History: The Oblates of Mary Immaculate made their first Canadian foundation, 1841. They erected the Saint-Boniface Mission Vicariate (Sainte Boniface, Manitoba) for Canada west of the Great Lakes, 1851; the Saint Albert Mission Vicariate (Sainte-Albert, Alberta) for western Canada, 1865; the Manitoba Province, 1904, which succeeded the Saint-Albert Vicariate; and St. Paul's Province, 1973. Oblates from British Columbia administered these Catholic missions and institutions among Native Americans in the United States:
